What does retirement look like to you? Or have you been so busy that you really haven’t given it
much thought? Maybe it’s time to start thinking about it, especially if time isn’t on your side.
If you’re a business owner and selling your business is part of your retirement plan, remember, it
takes anywhere from 2 to 3 years to plan and execute the sale of a business.
I have a definition of retirement that may help you. Being “retired” means doing what you want to do,
with whom you want, when you want. Does that work for you? Of course, it means other things such
as not being responsible for the actions of others (employees) and not being worried about money
and how to pay for retirement.
On January 30, 2024, my “retirement” from the CBI Team was announced and a subsequent Team
newsletter stated that as well. Paraphrasing Mark Twain, rumors of my retirement have been greatly
exaggerated. I have retired according to my own personal definition of retirement and have turned
over the reins of management to my friend and business partner Jon Holbert who is now CEO of the
CBI Team.
As for me, I remain Chairman of the Board and gladly work with and support Jon as he guides our
Team into the future. So, I’m not retired, if your definition of retirement is as one of my friends once
quipped, eating bon-bons and reading TV Guide in my recliner. How did I get here? Ah, that’s another,
sometimes painful, but ultimately successful story. In this column next month, I’ll share my experience
and maybe it will help you. And that’s all I have to say about that………I encourage each of you to contact CBI for a no-obligation review of your business before it’s too late.
Good planning can help your business survive and thrive to the next generation and more.
